Are Server Personalities Helping or Hindering Your Business?

Everyone has a unique personality. Some are outgoing while others are very introverted. When you’re hiring servers for your restaurant, you need to ensure personalities are being observed before offering a position to them. When you have the wrong personality in place, it could be hindering your business significantly.

When I’m hiring magicians and placing them into the different restaurants, I look at personality. If I don’t have an energetic magician at a family restaurant, it’s going to reflect negatively on that restaurant. Therefore I have to tap into my inner psychologist on a regular basis in order to understand the various personality types out there.

Based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychology, there are 16 different personality types. This includes four main categories of protectors, creators, intellectuals and visionaries. Each of your servers fit into a particular category. When you take the time to learn these, you can take control over the results you get with each and every guest that walks through your door.

Some personality types are going to be better suited to being a server than others. That’s not to say you have to give every applicant a personality type to determine whether they are worthy of working in your restaurant or not. However, you do need to pay attention to the personality types and see if a person is capable of adjusting their personality here and there based upon the needs of their table.

You may have someone who is very fast and others who are very slow. Some servers may be very warm while others distance themselves and come across as very cold. You may want to move servers around based upon their strengths and weaknesses. Some may be better off in the sections where you place all the families while others may be better suited to large parties or working in the cocktail lounge.

The more you know about servers’ personalities, the more you can coach them into being better servers for your concept. When you want to give each guest a certain feeling within the restaurant, all the food and ambiance in the world can be focused on creating it. But when it comes down to it, your server is responsible for the feeling that a guest has.

If a server is full of energy and zipping through an order, it may stress the guests out. On the flip side, if a server doesn’t have enough energy, it may make guests feel as though they aren’t getting the attention they need.
Personalities are critical. If you don’t know the personality of your server and/or they are unable to adjust their personality, they could be hurting business.
